The light turns golden and the shadows lengthen in the late afternoon sun of a clear spring day. The thick blanket of ice plant contrasts with the eroded rock. Heading south along Highway 1, the last high cliffs along the San Mateo County Coast are just north of Pescadero State Beach. These cliffs rise nearly 200 feet above the water before dropping down to around 30 or 40 feet above the tide line at Pescadero and on south. The long sandy beach of Pescadero is visible just beyond the cliff’s edge.
